Office Takeover: O&M Chicago

Hello from the cold and snow of Chicago for the ‘Chicago Takeover’ of this blog! My name is Seth Paterson, I’m one of the two Associates at the Chicago office of Ogilvy and Mather. I am currently in my second rotation in account management for the Tyson account, after starting off in planning on the CDW account.

Chicago is a beautiful city with so much to offer. There is some kind of street festival going on virtually every weekend during the summer, endless restaurants to try, a world of cultural immersion opportunities, and so much more. But, it’s pretty cold right now. In fact, it’s currently -3 degrees. So, during the winter, people tend to spend quite a bit of time inside at the office. Thankfully, this is a really great place to hide from the cold and wind because Protein Bar, my favorite restaurant in the city, is inside the office building.

In all seriousness, what makes this place special is the people. The people here are the best of the best at what they do, but at the same time, incredibly nice, humble, and patient. For example, I have never met a smarter, busier group of people than the planning department, but every planning director made time in their busy schedules to sit down with me and tell me about what they do, learn more about me, and offer me guidance.

The special thing about this program is that associates are treated like valued, fully capable employees. During my time in planning, I got to create and pitch a strategy recommendation directly to a client, help articulate a strategy for a new business pitch, and create a deck for the head of planning that will be circulated internally and to clients, among many other things. I even got to go to the planning department’s holiday gathering after my planning rotation had already ended. And this depth and breadth of experience is nothing short of the norm so far in my account management rotation. I am looking forward to seeing what’s in store for the rest of my time in the program.
