How would you describe your morning routine? What do you typically do?
This should probably change, but I’m not much of a breakfast person, so I’ll usually just eat a yogurt or granola bar before leaving for work. It depends on what I have going on that morning, but I usually get in a little earlier because I find I do my best thinking in the morning. I try to knock out some heavier work right when I get in, or some work that I know I won’t have time for during the day, all while drinking some coffee, tea or a smoothie — I like to mix it up.
Commuting in a big city, what is it like and what tips do you have about it?
Well, I always walk to work, so I can’t speak to commuting on the subway, but walking is amazing! I find it really wakes me up before I get to the office and I get a chance to listen to podcasts or music on my way. In case I get tired of walking though, Ogilvy has a few shuttles from key subway stations in the city that take you right to the office.
What is your go-to work outfit?
I almost always wear jeans because jeans are comfy and amazing. And I’ll throw on a button down or nice sweater.
What is something you always have at your desk?
I tend to keep my desk pretty clear because a clean desk helps me think, but I’ll usually have my mug for tea or a cup of water, and whatever I’m working on at the moment. Boring, I know.
What is your favorite spot in the office?
My cliché answer is the roof when the weather is nice. That being said, the northwest corner of the 11th floor has the best light in the entire building in the afternoon, it’s pretty amazing. I also love sitting in the red chairs on the 9th floor. I guess what I’m getting at is the office is great!
When you know it is going to be a challenging day at the office, what helps keep you motivated?
Thinking back to when I was in high school and college, working in New York at an agency like Ogilvy was my dream. I’ve been given an amazing opportunity with the Associates Program and I can’t let that go to waste.
What kind of projects have you worked on so far in this current rotation?
Because everything is still in the early stages of content creation and production, I don't think I can say without revealing confidential info.
Lunch break! What do you do for lunch?
Another habit I should probably break but I almost always eat out for lunch. I’ll usually grab something from the café, Gotham Market (Choza tacos are my life) or even Chipotle if I have time for the trip. When I do bring my lunch, my favorite has been chicken stir-fry.
What do you wish someone had told you day one?
The printers have a life of their own — sometimes I have to send a document three times just for it to show up once at the printer… or maybe I’m just really bad at printing.
How do you break up your work day?
I love listening to music if I have some work that will take some time to do, so that certainly helps. I’ll also talk for a little with other Associates if I have the time. For this rotation, however, I’m doing account management which is fast-paced and keeps me on my toes, so the day tends to fly by.
If you had to pick, what has been your favorite thing about working at Ogilvy?
Cliché again but the people. I’ve never been surrounded by so many brilliant and motivated people before; it’s incredibly inspiring. Not only are they brilliant and motivated, but they’re also very kind too; I haven’t met someone yet who wasn’t willing to help me if I had questions, or at least point me in the right direction.
Are you involved in any professional networks? If so, which ones and what do you like about it?
I am! I’m a member of the Young Professionals Network (YPN), the Women’s Leadership Professional Network (WLPN), and Ogilvy Pride (the LGBTQ PN). I think the professional networks are a great way to meet people outside of your day-to-day and celebrate the diversity at Ogilvy. Also, you don’t have to be part of a PN’s focus community to be involved — I’m an ambassador for Ogilvy Pride as an ally to the community and it’s been a great experience so far.
Hell’s Kitchen – what is a cool local spot/restaurant/shop around the office you have found that you love?
I’d say my go-to spot around the neighborhood is the Jolly Goat, a local coffee shop. They brew Stumptown beans and it’s delicious! I’m also a big fan of Kiabacca’s, a local bar. They have a pretty good beer selection and tasty appetizers for happy hour after work.
How do you wind down after a long day at work?
I’ve been running like crazy recently! I’m running a half marathon in March so I’ve been training for that when I can after work. I think running is a great stress reliever, especially because I only run outside. After being inside all day it’s great to get some fresh air.
When you are not in the office, what do you like to do around NYC?
In a city this big, there are a ton of different food influences and local cuisine. I love trying new restaurants and eating delicious food.
Ogilvy Facts 101 – what is something interesting you have learned about Ogilvy as a company?
There are many varieties of strategy at Ogilvy. Whatever your project requires, rest assured there will be a well-versed strategist ready to help.
If you get to leave the office early…
Given that it’s winter, I usually relish in the fact that it’s still light out. But once I get home I usually try to get some chores done so I’ll have more time on the weekends to relax and do cool stuff!
An Ogilvy secret revealed…
If you need inspiration, you can even find it in the stairwells! There are Ogilvy-isms all throughout the north-side stairwell.
