Where do you go to college and what are you studying?
I attend Smith College where I’m studying Sociology and Environmental Science and Policy.
Team you’re working on here at Ogilvy?
Nestlé Wyeth, Account Management. Our team is small, only 4 people including me, so every day is super busy, filled up by meetings with the client, creative, strategy, planning, production, etc. The day always goes by so quickly!
How would you describe your morning routine?
My roommate and I walk to work together, splitting up at 47th and Broadway. Once I get to work, I like to eat an apple, check my email and schedule, check in with my team, and then make sure everything is in order for the coming day - print outs, room bookings, etc.
What’s your staple work outfit?
I like wearing dresses and either cardigans or my trusty jean jacket.
Where do you go for lunch?
I mostly bring my lunch (shout out to Trader Joe’s!) and sometimes I go to the Ogilvy Café. As many of the interns know, my lunch staple is the leafy green arugula!
What’s your favorite spot in the office?
I love watching intense games of ping pong on the 9th floor. Steve and Paul are two of the most skilled ping pong players I’ve ever witnessed and I feel lucky when I catch a glimpse of their daily afternoon matches.
When you’re not in the office, what do you like to do around NYC?
I like biking around the city, going to concerts and shows, hanging out with my friends and other Smith alumnae, and eating sushirrito!
How did you hear about Ogilvy and this internship?
The Career Development Office at Smith, the Lazarus Center is named after Shelly Lazarus, Ogilvy Chairwoman Emeritus, and Smith class of ’68. I first heard about it my sophomore year when I told a career counselor at the Lazarus Center that I might be interested in advertising and she suggested I look into the the internship program. For the next year and a half, I made it my mission to learn as much as I could about the company, including reading Ogilvy on Advertising, finding all I could on the internet/social media about the company, and doing informational Interviews. Shout-out to Patty Woods at the Lazarus Center for helping me get here!
What do you think is special about this Ogilvy internship?
So much! I’m so grateful for the support and mentorship I’ve received here. We’re each assigned a mentor, usually someone who has previously been either an intern or associate, and my mentor Alex Wallace is amazing! She is another Smith alumna and has great advice. I also love the professional networks (which are like after school clubs). I joined Ogilvy Pride, and they’ve hosted so many cool events since I’ve been here including a screening of Moonlight, a panel about the role of allies in LGBTQ+ marketing, and a rooftop corporate mixer. Finally, as someone who has never studied advertising or marketing before, I love how much of this internship is dedicated to teaching us about agency life. Like David Ogilvy intended, it's truly a "teaching hospital" here. I'm trying to be a sponge.
What do you wish you knew about Ogilvy before you started your internship here?
You can rock your own style. No need to wear super formal business clothing. I was also extremely intimidated because I’ve never studied advertising and marketing, but it turned out fine!
What are you looking forward to in your senior year of college?
I’m looking forward to working at the Admissions Office as a senior interviewer, playing on the Smith tennis team, and being reunited with my housemates and professors. I am also looking forward to taking a fly-fishing class in the fall.
