What college do you attend and what are you studying?
Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. Majoring in Marketing and minoring in Sports Management.
Team you’re working on here at Ogilvy?
Account Management – Southwest Airlines. A usual day for me involves attending a lot of meetings (both client and internal) which I love. I also just do whatever my managers Claire & Alex need help with – sometimes that’s drafting decks, proofing presentations, doing research on the industry, or, my personal favorite, running (sprinting) around the entire, and I do mean entire, 11 story building to try to find a huddle for a last minute meeting. I recommend wearing removable layers because aggressively sweating in long sleeves and pants is not ideal, trust me.
How would you describe your morning routine?
I am not required to get to work until around 9:30am, so (if I’m feeling extra motivated) I like to go to an early boxing class at the club near my dorm. Then I run home, take a quick shower and brace myself to weave through the 8th ave tourist throngs which are especially heinous around 9:15am. My walk to Ogilvy from my dorm is about 25 minutes long. On the best days (aka when I’m not power walking to make it in on time) I stop at the bagel cart on the corner of 42nd & 9th for a bagel with cream cheese and some OJ. $2, y’all!!
What’s your staple work outfit?
It’s usually pretty relaxed business casual. Either a casual dress or skirt, some nice pants/white jeans, you get the idea.
Where do you go for lunch?
Gotham Market is home to the best tacos in the city, I would truly stake my career on it. $8 dollars for 3 tacos and it’s only a block away!! Thinking of leaving Ogilvy to join the marketing team for this taco joint, they sell themselves.
What’s your favorite spot in the office?
9th floor window by the elevators late at night - my favorite view of the city in the whole office.
When you’re not in the office, what do you like to do around NYC?
Eat really good food at really fun restaurants. If you’re from the South like me and need your queso fix, Javelina is the only restaurant I’ve found that has it. Also pretty much anything you eat in little Italy will be life changing.
How did you hear about Ogilvy and this internship?
Hagan, who is now my mentor in the program, and I have a mutual friend who got us in touch for an informational interview. Hagan mentioned Ogilvy has an internship program so I looked it up, applied online, and here we are.
What do you think is special about this Ogilvy internship?
Everyone here is clearly brilliant and so talented at what they do. Not only are Ogilvy employees insanely smart, your fellow interns will blow your minds!! We just finished up our summer-long intern project today for Showtime, and I can without a doubt say I have never worked with a smarter group of people than my four project teammates (shout out to my #SHOyouknow squad, y’all already know).
What do you wish you knew about Ogilvy before you started your internship here?
I wish I knew that it was 100% okay to have no real-world advertising experience going in. I came into this thinking I would be the only one who had never worked in an agency before, and that is absolutely not the case. They expect that, and will never hold it against you. In fact, Ogilvy really values people with different backgrounds and experiences because they bring new perspectives and ideas to the table. My experience being on a team (the SMU Varsity Cheerleading team) has been put into practice the most here, as teamwork is something that is really valued here.
What are you looking forward to in your senior year of college?
Everything! I’m Excited to be done with the core curriculum and get to take some classes more specific to what I want to do. This summer experience has set me up perfectly for my last year of my marketing degree. Can’t wait to get back to Texas and enjoy my last year.
